According to an old neighbour Minstrel was the offspring a "pedigree" (mutley) cat which belonged to him- a feline which had been kidnapped at his prime and taken to Hamilton for secret breeding purposes. Legend also has it that Minstrel fought through ten linings of sacking to narrowly escape being drowned in the Waikato River. Provenance may never be established.
